7 Tips for Managing GLP-1 Side Effects

Nausea, constipation, and fatigue are common early on. These practical tips can help you feel better while your body adjusts.

Medically reviewed by Dr. Ibrahim Elsheikh, MD, MBA

Most side effects from GLP-1 medications are mild and happen in the first few weeks or right after a dose increase. These simple habits can make a big difference.

1. Eat smaller meals, more slowly

GLP-1 medications slow digestion, so large meals can sit heavily. Try smaller portions and stop eating when you feel comfortably satisfied, not full.

2. Go easy on greasy and fried foods

High-fat meals are one of the most common nausea triggers. Lean proteins, vegetables, and whole grains are usually easier to tolerate.

3. Prioritize protein

Aim to include protein at every meal. It helps protect muscle as you lose weight and keeps you feeling steady between meals.

4. Stay hydrated

Reduced appetite often means reduced fluid intake. Sip water throughout the day, especially if you notice headaches, fatigue, or constipation.

5. Add fiber gradually

Fiber from vegetables, fruit, beans, and whole grains supports regular digestion. Increase it slowly to avoid bloating.

6. Keep moving

Light activity, like a short walk after meals, can help with digestion and energy levels.

7. Talk to your care team

Never adjust your dose on your own. If side effects are bothering you, message your care team. They can slow your dose increases or suggest other adjustments.

Seek medical care right away if you have severe or persistent stomach pain, vomiting you can't keep fluids down, or signs of an allergic reaction.
